Seeking Purpose
What exactly is our purpose? If it is said that there are no extra humans on this planet and that we are all indeed unique and necessary, then why do I hear so many individuals say how dissatisfied they are with how they are living or what they are doing? I think I have been obsessed with what it means to find out what our purpose is in this lifetime for the last several years, but especially the last year. And, maybe many of you have thought about this at one point or another.
For me, to know my purpose is to “feel” my purpose. What am I here to do before I shed this mortal coil? I’ve spent a long time in service to people. If all of us are living on purpose, it should make us feel a high level of enthusiasm. Now, I say enthusiasm as opposed to excitement. The former arises out of a soulful resonance based on passion whereas the latter is a transient emotion based on external stimuli and when the novelty wears off, we feel a tremendous downward spiral until the next event appears.
The next question is, then, is purpose something we search for or is purpose something we allow to come through us so that we can feel our way through and act upon it everyday? How do we live our purpose? What does that really mean? Perhaps the real question we need to ask ourselves is what do we really want out of this life and what do we love doing? That is a good place to start.
I never thought about purpose as a topic that would ever concern me. This word was not even in my vocabulary when I was younger. I guess it was because I felt I had all the time in the world and I just did what everyone else did. Also, I was busy doing everything that would make my parents proud — go to school, get straight A’s, play the piano well so that I could be last performer on the recital program, go to college, and so on. I was so preoccupied with achieving the next goal and the next goal and the next one after, that there was no room to consider otherwise. As long as my goals aligned with the adults who raised me, there was never any question.
Of course, once I went to college and I didn’t have my parents constantly talking into my ear, I had to start figuring out who I was. I had to make my own decisions, find out what I liked and what I didn’t. Suddenly, everything felt strange as if I had never seen anything in this world around me before. It was scary but it forced me to reach out to find advisors and mentors. Now, I know where the fear comes from and that the magic is always on the other side of that fear if I allow the old stories and patterns to fall away. And, I began the journey of discovering who exactly I was and what I would want to do with my life. What was interesting at this point was as soon as I allowed authenticity to emerge, to find my voice, my opinion, that was when I started having conflict with my parents. All of a sudden, my interests and goals were not in alignment with theirs. I had found my own voice.
Depending on how I choose to look at this, the turning point could be considered fortunate or unfortunate. I know now that all change is positively transformative and brings us out of the dangerously stagnant comfort zone of doing the same mundane things everyday, week after week, month after month, and year after year, going to the same restaurants, the same locations for vacation, etc. These habits that most of us have fascinate me because we all realize that our time on earth is short, yet why do we continue to do the same things over and over? We even order and eat the same food over and over at the restaurant. Why don’t most of us try new things everyday, every week, month or year? Why do we choose to go to the same places and do the same things everyday? I believe it is the mindset, which is what I talked about in last week’s blog. We have a habit of desiring to relive the emotional high we experienced the first time, not realizing that anything we do again will never give us the same level of excitement as the initial moment.
Everyday I report to a work place to not only be of service to others, but I am also doing what I love. I feel genuinely blessed and if each day I was able to make a significant difference for one individual that was transformative, then that was a successful day and I leave work feeling pretty awesome. It used to bother me when I couldn’t make everyone feel better, but then I learned that we humans all have a specific belief system determined by a collection of paradigms that started when we were in the womb. So, either our energies did not align or they were never meant to align or it is not the right time to align yet. Every person also has a journey to walk and to fulfill and a specific time for discovery.
So, at this point, I invite you to take a short break and get out a pen and your journal or a piece of paper and do the following:
Write down 10 things you are grateful for
Read out loud the 10 things you wrote, close your eyes and feel each one
Write down 10 things you’ve always wanted and still want or want to do or want to be. If you have more, keep writing
Look at what you wrote for number 3 and write down why you haven’t done it yet and then what next step can you take right away, even if it is just a small step
Hopefully, the above exercise shifted your emotions to a higher level. I encourage you to do the above exercise at least 2 to 3 times a day or more. The goals can be about a material item, a destination or about our health. Some folks I have met have added their own negative programming based on past events and are unable to allow themselves heal. They allow other people’s beliefs about them keep them in the sick role and are not even aware that they are doing this. The worst is that even their own beliefs about themselves keep them in the sick role.
These folks also are either resistant to accept the hypothesis that they may “never get better,” or they go to the other extreme and resist the possibility that they may actually heal completely. They are unable to distinguish between a hypothetical situation and reality. It is said that our beliefs and programming about ourselves can be changed through continuous repetition. I have also witnessed patients recover and heal completely once they mentally accept the premise that theirs may be the best they’ll ever be.
Through acceptance and allowance, we can then see how the body steps up the game. Research repeatedly shows that the more we resist something, the more it persists. Accepting a current idea is not synonymous with wanting it to be like that forever. It is simply acknowledging the present situation and that is it. This action stops us from fighting ourselves. Then, the magic of who we are and who we are supposed to be comes through and expresses itself.
Knowing our purpose allows us to live our lives to the fullest level. Our purpose gives us permission to be our authentic self. It is never based on what others want or expect from us. It is never about what we were yesterday or even 2 minutes ago. We are changing every moment. We are all unique and possess gifts designed for each of us. Discovering our purpose is connected to knowing who we are and what we really want in life.
When I’ve interviewed people and I have interviewed many because I am always curious about their secret, the ones who are healthy and are not taking any medications are living the life of purpose about which they are passionate. They also flow with events that happen around them, knowing that nothing is ever done to them. Things just are the way they are sometimes in life and everything is temporary. Ultimately, our health improves and we begin to control the path to thriving instead of just surviving upon chance.
At this point, we can take another short break and so my offer is to repeat the above exercise 1 thru 4. Then, check in with your emotions and ask yourself how differently are you feeling. Again, if you keep at it and are consistent, you will feel your life begin to shift.
Meditation and relaxation:
1) Find a quiet place and sit comfortably. Close your eyes and take a slow deep breath through your nose and track the breath down into the belly (5-7 seconds). Then, release into the exhale through your mouth (5-7 seconds). Do this again 2 to 3 more times or more if it calls to you
2) The Meridian areas to gently tap with your finger tips (8-10 seconds) to access today and rotate/repeat through are as follows:
-Chest points on both sides, walled by the breast bone and collarbone
-Brow points near the forehead at the bridge of the nose both sides
-Corners of both eyes, at the bony sockets
-Under the both eyes at the top of the cheek bones
-Blade areas of both hands, the palm edges below the pinky fingers
3) Intentional statements to use while tapping the Meridian areas (check out previous issues for more statements)
—Why am so healthy now that I didn’t notice before?
—Why do I heal so quickly now that I didn’t notice before?
—Why is the past not who I am now that I didn’t notice before?
—Why am I so abundant in all facets of my life that I didn’t notice before?
—Why am I able to install better beliefs in my mind that I didn’t notice before?
—Why am I so successful that I didn’t notice before?
—Why am I embracing my uniqueness that I didn’t notice before?
—Why am I living my purpose now that I didn’t notice before?
—Why am I living with passion that I didn’t notice before?
4) Conclude with breathing exercises from 1) and if in the morning, you can get ready for the day and if at night, you can just go to bed.

I just saw the play Pippin yesterday, which is about finding your purpose. The moral of that story is that the purpose is in the everyday and that the search for some grand purpose just gets us off track and into trouble. But that we can be easily seduced into believing that there is something else.
