Great Expectations
I absolutely loved this work by Charles Dickens. Brings me back to my high school senior honors English literature class with my favorite teacher Mrs. Berlot. I actually hadn’t thought about this literary work until just now, but my thoughts drifted to beautifully cherished memories of my all-time favorite reader and interpreter of Dickens and Shakespeare. I reflected for some time this evening how I learned so much from her and how some individuals are so innately special, and can really leave you with a forever incredible impression that positively affects us for a lifetime.
Expectations, great or small...I’ve touched upon this in previous blogs. Having any expectation can be a double-edged sword. How so? Positively speaking, for a goal-driven achiever, having high expectations fused with positive emotions and focused desire can be a powerful force to be reckoned with. On the other hand, whenever we feel that an individual or an event has disappointed us, we must remember that it is never that person or that thing that commits the disappointing. It is our expectation of some specific outcome of which we feel deserving that disappoints us.
People don’t disappoint us. They disappoint our expectations of them. Nothing by itself really ever has the power to disappoint us.
We also see things not as they are. We see things as we are. Whatever we see in others is what is parallel to unresolved trauma triggered inside of ourselves. Real change requires this trauma to be released in our own time. Expectations, however, can also wield a powerful force to help us heal.
This week, I had the fortunate opportunity to work with more individuals who aspire to heal themselves completely. They’ve expressed an underlying frustration of remaining in the status quo despite being on the latest drug and not being considerably improved but instead, progressing slowly with their disease process; they feel compelled to accept their lot in life. For most, even the hope of some degree of improvement is both feared and welcome.
Probably one of the most challenging aspects of healing is being able to imagine having a stronger and healthier body and to keep that image in our mind for a sustainable period of time necessary for the change to manifest. This is especially true when we are accustomed to feeling what we feel right now at heightened negativity. Many of us are only too familiar with focusing on our present negative situation and circumstances and allowing that to dictate our condition tomorrow.
If we remember that the body is a faithful servant of the mind, we have the inherent power to use the mind to successfully influence transformation in the body. It is stated in quantum physics that nothing stands still but that everything is a composite of molecules vibrating with energy. Most individuals understand that our bodies are mostly electrical and magnetic in nature and so it makes sense that whatever we focus on with a part of our mind presents as a vibration, which then travels to the preprogrammed mindset (Bruce Lipton calls this the prerecorded cassette tape from age 0 to 7).
It is then stated in personal growth literature that if we direct a constant focus on how we want to be and feel in the future and then anchor our authentic emotion with conviction, then over time, it becomes inevitable that our body then follows suit as it begins to turn around in the direction of thriving. Remember that whether the mind messages what is true or imagined, the body cannot differentiate between them and will accept either one.
The method does appear simple, yet there are a few potential obstacles that can creep up insidiously. The most common error is not that we are giving up too soon. It is simply giving up — period. We tend to give up because we are not seeing the results we expect to see right away. Our egoic mind fools us into thinking we must observe evidence of change. We have to remember that any change follows a timeline. Even when we plant a seed down, we have to wait for the right conditions for it to root and break ground.
In the past week, I have used the analogy of a bowl of red buttons to illustrate the above point. Let’s say we have a bowl of 1000 red buttons and we wish to change it to a bowl of green buttons. Then, let’s say, we add 1 green button to the bowl in exchange for a red button everyday. Would you agree that after a week, we may not see any of the green buttons but just the red, yet we know that that is no longer a bowl of red buttons. It contains 7 green ones. The bowl has changed.
Once the number of green buttons increases to a threshold number, it is at that point we will see 1 or more green buttons intermixed with the red. It is at this time that the egoic mind has the proof it needs to continue to move forward. Now, this example is a conceptual one. Individuals have said that their bodies feel so badly or their mind feels so depressed or anxious that it takes every ounce of energy to bring them to think a different way, to direct the mind to think wellness thoughts.
I then remind them about how the mind can always conquer the body. The saying mind over matter describes this phenomenon. This is not to say that it will be an easy task; in fact, most of the greatest outcomes are a direct result of tremendous effort. There is no celebration in that which is easy. Easy is overrated.
We also must remember that whatever our current situation is, this is the result of whatever we did yesterday. As I mentioned in previous blogs, if we desire a permanent change from the status quo, we have to plant a new seed and grow a new tree. Any attempt to prune or pluck the old tree may offer an improvement but it is temporary at best. As we give our attention and nourish the new tree, we naturally neglect the old tree and it will disintegrate eventually in its own time. Then, at some point, we assign our health issues to the old tree as the new tree represents our new identity, free of disease.
Finally, remember that sitting in meditation is vital to allow the mind to clear itself and stay focused on our goals to get healthier. It is a time we can release expectation. This may sound confusing but hear me out. As I mentioned above, there is a time frame that is required for any seed to germinate and become that new tree. Universal laws will dictate when that will happen. The germination time is not controlled by us. To release the frustration we may feel that the results should have arrived yesterday, because of the egoic influence, we utilize our time in meditation to release these types of expectations.
Expect to become better and you will become that.
Meditation and Relaxation
1) Did you remember to write your 8 to 10 gratitudes in your journal or even on a piece of paper? Do this in the morning as soon as you wake up and right before you go to bed. Remember to take a moment to truly feel each one.
2) Find a quiet spot and sit up comfortably. Close your eyes and breathe in through your nose or pursed lips and track the breath all the way down to the belly (5-7 seconds). Then, breathe out through pursed lips while pushing the belly back toward the spine (5-7 seconds). Repeat 2 or more times, whatever resonates with you.
3) Access the following Meridian points (you can personalize and choose your own favorite points in any order and repeat specific ones also) while saying the intentional statement-questions in section 4).
—Chest point, one or both sides
—Blade of hand, one hand or alternate both
—Brow area, one or both sides
—Corner of the eye, one or both sides
—Under the eye at top of cheekbone, one or both sides
—Under the nose above the upper lip
—Under lower lip at the dip
—Side at the rib cage, one or both sides
—Top of head
—Chest point, one or both sides
4) Intentional statement-questions used with Meridian access points
—Why have I released all heaviness from my body that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I released all heaviness from my mind that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I released all things that no longer serve me that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I released all burdens that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I always been more than enough that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I always had more than enough that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I always been worthy of abundance that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I been able to show myself so much love that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I been able to value and validate myself that I didn’t notice before?
—Why do I feel an abundance of peace and joy that I didn’t notice before?
—Why am I so very grateful for everything on a daily basis that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I accepted expectations of greatness for myself that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I released expectations that no longer serve me that I didn’t notice before?
5) Conclude with breathing exercises from 2). You can continue to sit on in meditation and reflection for 30 to 45 more minutes.
6) Remember to install the habit of gratitude listing from 1) in the morning and before bedtime, if possible.
7) Exercise and stretch for 10 to 15 minutes once or twice daily.
8) Learn something new everyday for 10 to 15 minutes once or twice daily.
9) Eat whole foods daily, hydrate and rest adequately
