The Power of Memory
Present-day science merging with personal development continues to reinforce the importance of using our higher mental faculties to live a more fulfilling and purposeful life, rather than the more accepted and common way of depending on our basic 5 senses to define where our life is going. There are 6 that are written about — Perception, Memory, Intuition, Imagination, Reason, and Will. We can use these not only to create and change our circumstances, but to also connect with higher intelligence, the universe, unlike nature’s creatures.
As human beings, or spiritual beings having a human experience, we tend to do exceptionally well when everything is going our way. Our spirits are high, we laugh with incredible ease, and we can easily overfill the happiness jar and then some, because we just simply feel invincible.
But, what about those times when things aren’t going so well for a variety of reasons and you’re wondering what went wrong? Much of what I read indicates that our thoughts are responsible for everything we attract, whether we perceive them as good or bad, and that fate or destiny or the saying, “Things are meant to be,” are all illusions and don’t exist. We are responsible for everything we get. This seems like such a hard pill to swallow.
This appears to be the belief in the majority of personal development programs that are currently trending. None of this is new, by the way. Neville Goddard, Harold Sherman, and Joseph Murphy are among many authors and educators who have consistently emphasized the power of our thoughts to wield incredible outcomes that the majority of the public would consider impossible, coincidental, or “lucky.”
I used to also doubt our power to choose the way we really want to live our lives after so many years of dealing with the misery affecting those who believed they had chronic diseases or were thoroughly convinced everyday that they would be sick again despite being healthy for a number of years. I also wondered why so many people were constantly in a state of worry and fear, frustration and unhappiness, and living a life of unrealized dreams and long bucket lists? Why are so many caged in jobs during the day rather than spending more quality time with loved ones or traveling the world freely anytime and for as long as they want?
Hey, I’d like to include, yeah, “Yours Truly.”
What many authors agree on is that our belief system or old paradigm establishes the concept of reality and that there is a general belief in the masses that we do not deserve an abundant life because we were not born into it, or others were smarter, or possessed something we did not. The fact is no one has more ability than the next person. We are all equipped with the same amount of spirit and energy. We are all creative and powerful. Gary Zukav (Seat of the Soul), Michael Beckwith (Agape), and many others talk about this being the Earth school and that we are all old souls here to learn and grow. They maintain that we chose to come here. The agreement was that we would not remember anything, so as to not spoil our experience, hence, the great amnesia.
When I’ve had discussions with our support group, we agree that it is one thing to utilize our intellect and reasoning faculties to come to an understanding, a knowing, that we truly have the power to form anything in the mind and to have that manifested in our physical arena; but it is quite another to fully live and breathe this as a true soul’s knowing. What many books on the Law of Attraction don’t explain fully is that it is not just having the thought or image in the mind of whatever goal you want to achieve (health, materials, happiness), but the deep emotions that you have to incorporate as if all that you wish for has really happened right now. This requires some really good acting abilities. But, this ability does improve with practice, much like every new skill you learn.
Many of my clients have asked if there were other things they could do if they were not that good in imagining things that haven’t happened yet, even though they were things they really desired. They said that every time they closed their eyes to wish for something, their heart would flutter because in the back of their minds they believed the opposite, that they had no hope that things would improve for them. They said that their eyes tell them the reality of things. People around them would tell them to just be practical and stop wishing and dreaming. They felt stronger emotion about the health they lacked or the material items they did not have at that moment than what their imagination could conceive.
So, I thought about one of the 6 higher mental faculties, memory, which is always anchored with intense emotion. Though we are told to avoid dwelling in the past about what was great because what is to come in the future will always be even better than anything we have experienced in the past, memories of past positive events can be used as an effective crutch or temporary training wheels, because the emotions will still be real and palpable, and therefore, effective in elevating the vibrational frequency of our energy.
I have trained my clients as a daily practice, to do imagineering exercises which involve visualization combined with emotion, which they can do twice a day minimum, once when they awakened in the morning and once before bedtime. If possible, it is recommended to add another practice time midday. These sessions could take as little as a few minutes or longer as desired. The more seasoned clients do this exercise for seconds to minutes all throughout the day with their eyes open. The main takeaway is repetition and consistency. If the subconscious mind has already been programmed to see lack and limitation since infancy by the adults who raised us, replacing those programs will take tenacity and commitment. Those who practiced this faithfully did report excitedly in subsequent sessions that they noticed significant changes in the quality of their health, lifestyle and that they felt happier. I invite you to try this for at least 30 days and see if you feel a difference.
Like anything, memory is no different. Focus on the positive and loving memories. Make that walk down memory lane a pleasant and fun one. Choose to remember only the incredible and amazing ones. Remember that the energy from positive thoughts will vibrate differently from negative ones, attracting things into your life from opposite ends of life’s spectrum.
Finally, I will conclude with the following suggestions to help you sit and stay seated during quiet meditation:
1) My mind is so loud and distracting that I just have to get up — My offer to you is stay seated, remembering that thoughts cannot throw daggers at you and kill you. They are things trying to leave. What has helped some of my clients is saying out loud the following: a) Trash is leaving my mind; it stinks and has to leave b) My thoughts are not about me; I am not my thoughts c) My thoughts come and go so they don’t belong to me; my arms and legs belong to me; they don’t come and go.
2) Why can’t I open my eyes and just get up? — As soon as you open your eyes, the window closes and the “trash” stays in your mind. Getting up and doing things, keeping busy, distracting us, is the Ego of the mind “keeping us stuck in our old story” and so prevents us from moving forward and allowing things to change for the better.
3) Why do I have to meditate again? —To help you navigate life easier, to remove everything in your life that complicates or clutters it, to reduce stress and to grow more brain (a 2011 Harvard study showed through brain scans that meditation for a minimum of 8 weeks increased grey matter in the prefrontal cortex which controls memory, problem solving, thought, and cognition).
4) If I meditated once, and feel better, can I stop? — No, because meditation is a practice. You don’t brush your teeth once and say that you’re good for the whole year, right? It has to be done daily for it to work. The good news is that if you set this up as an assignment or project for the next 21 days, meditation will become a habit, something you do automatically.
5) Is there any way to make me get into the sitting faster? — Yes, in fact, if you do 5 to 10 minutes of Meridian Therapy (based on EFT and tapping) prior to intended sitting, it can be used as an induction method for meditation as it converts the beta waves of the awaken state into the alpha meditative waves. Wrapping Up
Remember that the busier you are, the more you have to meditate. When you think you can’t afford the time to meditate, you can’t afford not to. I have been so fortunate to hear so many success stories from clients, who at one point adamantly reported that there was no way they could sit and they are sitting now for an hour or more and has become something they look forward to everyday.
Clients have also told me how their lives that were seemingly so complicated were no longer that way. Things that people say or do to them that used to bother them no longer bother them anymore. They are not afraid to say no to things that don’t align with their inner truth. Those who were convinced that they didn’t have any time had so much time freed up they didn’t know what to do with it.
Chronic illnesses resolved. Relationships improved and changed. Careers, jobs and finances flourished. They are doing more of what they want to do in life rather than what they feel they have to do. The majority of us spend a great deal of our lives living anywhere but the present moment. Many of us don’t even know what that really means. We can live in regret and disappointment by dwelling in the past or live in fear with worries about the future that has not arrived.
We need to realize (through meditation) that all any of us ever have is this moment in time, called the present moment or “the now.” It is the only sliver of time to which we have access and with which we can control the future. Everything is temporary. If we can be in gratitude and love for just feeling our breath or heartbeat; if we can just be ourselves as we are now and accept everything as they are, then the future gifts us with more for which we can be grateful.
If we can surrender to the 3 words, “I don’t know,” we open ourselves to receive the knowledge that we need; if we can surrender to emptiness and nothingness, then we open ourselves to receive everything in abundance. Remember that we need to release to receive — that is the paradox of living in the present moment. At the end of the day, it isn’t the money or the vacation for which we are searching, but a sense of peace in the heart and the courage to do what calls to our heart’s passion as often as we can and for as long as we can while we are attending this Earth school.
