Mind Your Mind
In my continued search for nouveau ways of helping individuals heal themselves beyond where they are now — their mind, body, and spirit — I discovered, to my surprise, all this literature, all this material, that I had never learned in med school. There is so much beyond what I am currently implementing daily. Just when I thought teaching about gut microbiome, meditation and Meridian therapy was going to help folks really level up their A game in life, I was frankly astonished that I was missing a lot more. Recently, an old friend introduced me to wealth management programs she was studying and told me to utilize the methods in training my clients how to heal. And, she was serious.
Her major has always been in the field of finances and she told me before I had a chance to dismiss her recommendation to keep an open mind and to just look into what she was saying. She told me that at first she thought her studies would lead her to the subject of banks, businesses and money. She was completely taken aback when all the authors ever talked about was the mind and that all forms of success and all forms of failure originate without prejudice from the mind.
She pointed out that within each book she found at least one chapter dedicated to health and happiness. That was when she realized that everything about our existence revolved around the mind and our understanding of how it works, or the lack there of judging by what we see around us.
It is written that no one has ever seen the mind, and for that reason, it has been a challenge to learn about. Most people when asked what the mind looked like would refer to the brain, yet the brain is merely an electrical circuit relay center and that the brain is as much the mind as an eyelash. Though the brain is mass in the physical plane, the mind is considered as movement and that the speed of thought waves is many times faster than the speed of light. This just boggled my mind.
Thought is a vibrational frequency and travels. Emotion is the expression of the vibration originating from the mind. The mind consists of 2 parts, the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious mind is the educated or the thinking mind and has the ability to choose a better life. The subconscious mind is the emotional mind and has no ability to accept or reject information linked to high emotion. This is also the preprogrammed mind that is left wide open at ages 0 to 7.
The preprogram mindset is also referred to as the preset collection of paradigms (old beliefs and behaviors) which is fairly difficult to alter. These so-called paradigms reside in the subconscious mind. Whenever we attempt to choose in the conscious mind without attaching emotion or conviction, that choice is rejected by the paradigm and we continue running the old patterns of belief, including our illnesses.
Scientific studies have shown that repetitive use of positive affirmations, autosuggestions, hypnosis, Meridian and other types of active meditations, and various behavioral conditioning over a period of time can affect the preprogrammed mindset. This is when there is an observable change in the desired direction of the individual. This is the key to how one who is chronically ill can become one who is healthy and thriving.
The first step is to write out our desired health goals and more importantly, what we believe we are able to do when we reach our goal health that we cannot do right now. These can be accomplished by writing out statements. For instance, let’s say we have had weak legs for some time, so if we wrote out statements describing how strong and flexible our legs are, we need to follow that with what we would picture ourselves doing with strong, flexible legs —hike more, bike more, travel more, go bungee jumping, etc., you get the idea.
The second step is to change your future goals to things you are experiencing right now, so you would talk about the above as if you already feel that now, that your legs are already strong and flexible and you are picturing yourself hiking, biking, or whatever it is you would be doing when your health changes. You are talking about and bringing your future into the present time. Because the body is a faithful servant of the mind, it will follow suit.
The third step is to anchor emotion into the goal health statements. Without heightened emotion, the goals will not be accepted by the preprogrammed subconscious mind. The goals have to be accepted by this part of the mind in order for the vibrational frequency to travel down to the body.
Steps 1, 2 and 3 above are accomplished as spoken statements you would do everyday, at least once in the morning and once before bedtime and any time in between. You would also act the part at all times despite how you physically feel, understanding that how you presently feel is from all that has happened in thought and action previously in the past. This is part of the self image you must change in order for an outer physical change to occur. You need to hold a healthy self image instead of keeping to the sick self image. Remember that you cannot change your present circumstances by fighting current reality. You have to build a new model of you.
I am frequently asked how long would the above method take before they would feel the change? It depends on your tenacity, your will power, discipline, persistence and belief that you can change. How badly do you want it? And yes, everyone has equal abilities to accomplish this. That means, including you.
In the beginning I wrote about my perplexity when my friend introduced to me wealth management materials to change our health. It is much more clear to me now, why this is true. It is truly incredible how everything revolves around the mind and the our thoughts. It is so true that we become what we think about most. I have come to understand more and more through studying the neuroscience of the mind and its faculties, that the mind can make us sick and the mind can make us well. The mind can make us happy and the mind can make us unhappy. How we perceive every situation stems from the mind.
There is much research recently about neuroplasticity, the ability of the brain to form and reorganize synaptic connections pertaining to response to learning or experience or following injury. It describes the brain’s ability to change over the course of our lifetime. Personal development author and speaker Mary Morrissey talks about how the mind can wield changes beyond our wildest imagination and that once we realize how much we do control how we want to live our lives, we realize that the outside world or our external experience is plastic and illusory.
Everyday, I meet with individuals who are already taking all the drugs they were prescribed. They have done all the tests, and have gotten all the procedures and surgeries offered and still, there is no relief in sight. At this point, the advice is to continue the status quo. My offer is to be open to what may seem illogical or even unheard of. Sometimes things sound illogical because we have never been taught certain things. My friend certainly surprised me as I never expected some of these books she referred to me were published in the early 1900’s and that they knew back then how the mind, body, spirit and life worked harmoniously together.
The take home message here is that we may think that that brief moment of a sigh accompanied by saying things like,
“I’m so tired,” or “I can’t believe I’m still sick,” or “Why does this always happen to me?” or “Why can I never catch a break?” or “I can’t believe I’m so dumb or stupid,”
do not matter. They actually can bring us down slowly. The mind is a fertile soil. It can bring about joy as easily as it can bring about misery in our lives. It is said that the mind can help us thrive or kill us slowly. I’ve often said to individuals that some things seem too “out there” to be true, but I always remember what one of favorite teachers use to say,
“There may be things out there that you don’t believe in, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. And, by the way, they believe in you.”
So, make it a sincere habit to cultivate positive thoughts. Think about and say the things you want in your life and avoid thinking about and saying the things you don’t want in your life. It is said that in order for the law of attraction (one of the 7 natural laws of God/universe) to work, you must expect what you desire. Have the desire to be and feel healthy and then believe and expect it to happen. Expectation powers the desire to occur and manifest on the physical plane, our body. Otherwise, it becomes just an idle wish.
I was recently reminded that whether or not I practiced this law or any of the laws of the universe, whether or not I chose to ignore it, the law of attraction is always playing. If we don’t participate and direct it, it will work against us instead, especially when our mind is naturally wired for the negative.
Remember twice a day to write 8 to 10 things you are grateful for and spend a few minutes really feeling them. The emotions anchor the thoughts and buy the ticket to enter the subconscious mind. From there, the thoughts become a reality.
I can’t wait to discover in the upcoming months, what else about the mind I never learned in med school.
