Controlling Our Reality: The Power of Thought
“We are what we think.”
I thought about that this week. I’ve always been fascinated by how 2 people could have similar health issues but behave at different ends of the spectrum. The significance is the difference between one individual living the live of thrivation and that other, in survival mode, viewing the world with doom and gloom.
I concluded that the content of our thoughts is everything.
Over the years, I’ve had the great fortune of observing and interviewing so many people who live a seemingly charmed life, not because they didn’t have any medical conditions, but it was because they chose to own a more positive perception.
Their secret each and every time was that they practiced a life of daily gratitude and love. Feelings of gratitude and love carry the highest energy potential. In the morning these folks would avoid turning on the news, avoid looking at their phones, and just wrote down in their journal or on a piece of paper, things they were grateful for. Then, they would exercise and learn something new. This is what I have done for a number of years and how I’ve kept myself healthy.
When your mind is filled with gratitude, negative thoughts cannot occupy the same space. The mind in unable to entertain both simultaneously. Of course, flooding the mind with gratitudes can be a challenge when we are under the weather or when we have pain. However, we have to remember that wherever we are along the healing timeline, feeling grateful will only speed up the process, not hinder it. Complaining about things as they are will never improve the current situation.
We forget that making ourselves feel miserable isn’t going to get us closer to getting better. Quite the opposite is true, actually. Remember that we may not avoid pain, but suffering is optional. Through observation, I discovered that any type of complaint not only produces frustration, unhappiness and depression, but renders the body slower to heal. This is linked to cortisol production, the inflammatory stress hormone.
Much of the personal development literature documents that all thoughts of negativity produce a negative energy vibration within us that then emanates outward because we are electrical (via movement of charged ions) and magnetic (via iron in the red blood cells) in nature. This then invites more unpleasant events to find us; we begin to attract more negativity. Most importantly, however, is that if we harbor negative thoughts, our body suffers further.
Remember that feeling anything other than the 3 states of being — peace, love, and joy (according to Eckhart Tolle) produces a state of stress and anxiety within us. And, because the body is the instrument of the mind, whatever the mind is thinking about, the body follows. When the mind thinks only of the positive, the body reacts positively whether the situation is real or imagined.
A very famous experiment in which football players were in a closed room connected to monitors showed that when asked to visualize running a touchdown, the heart rate increased, the blood pressure elevated and the sweat glands became active; yet, they were not out in the field, but sitting comfortably in a room. Whatever the mind thinks about, the body follows, real or not.
In many of the blogs I include intentional statements. These are more effective than positive affirmations. Positive affirmations can be contradicted by the egoic mind. For example, if we say that we are feeling healthy, the mind quickly comes back saying we are not. Several people asked me last week how to compose these intentional statements. The technique is very simple.
—Write a statement of how you want to feel or your goals.
—Turn the statement into a question by adding a “Why” or “How” at the beginning of the statement.
—End the question with “that I didn’t notice before” so that it implies the favorable condition had been going on for some time but that you only noticed it recently.
Our thoughts control our reality. Reality is always perceived. Reality is always subjective. It is said that words are powerful because they carry inherent energy and vibration. Our words can either betray us or lift us. Fortunately, we can choose. A popular quote I have come across time and time again is,
“Whether you feel you are or are not, whether you feel you can or cannot, are all true.”
The words we choose become thoughts. Our thoughts become feelings. The feelings become beliefs. The beliefs affect perception. Our perception affects our healing potential and the level of wellness. Words of gratitude transform our thought process. Whatever we think about affects our reality in all facets of life. We cannot change or control what is external and we don’t need to. We just need to control our own thoughts. This is the power we all have over our health. This is the power over our lives to which we have always been privileged. It is our birthright. Own it.

2) Access the Meridian points of your choice. Refer to the pictorials below.
3) Intentional statements for today (also refer to previous newsletters for more)
—Why do I feel so healthy now that I didn’t notice before?
—Why do I feel so resilient now that I didn’t notice before?
—Why do I feel so vibrant now that I didn’t notice before?
—Why do I feel so incredible now that I didn’t notice before?
—Why do I feel so light now that I didn’t notice before?

The above statements can be repeated as many times as necessary while accessing the Meridian points with light repetitive pressure using the finger tips or tapping.
4) Conclude your Meridian meditation with the breathing exercises from 1) and go about your day if you are doing this in the morning and go to bed if it is night time.
