Being
In the last week or so, I have received questions about the nature of “being” versus “doing.” Many of us, including yours truly, were raised with the idea that we must always be busy and that being idle brings trouble. With the emergence of personal development, we were made to realize that when we spend our days busy being busy and busy doing, we may not be as productive as we thought. On the contrary, the outcome may be less yield altogether.
In this culturescape, when individuals appear to be doing a lot of busy running around, this may be an action of distraction. There is substantial research in personal development that being productive members of society may not always mean that we have to constantly be on the go. In fact, personal growth authors frequently encourage us to take time each day to sit quietly in contemplation or meditation.
In order to make sound decisions and to be an effective problem solver, the mind has to be clear. But, clearing the mind is not something we actively do. Just offering the mind still time while we just sit without moving, allows the mind to do what it naturally knows how to do—clear itself of the clutter it does not need to make room for what is important.
One of the misconceptions of meditation is that we must be able to sit still and that if the mind goes a hundred miles an hour, there is no way to sit still. Many people believe that there are certain individuals who can meditate while others cannot and that it is not meant for everyone. This cannot be further from the truth. Meditation is for everyone and is necessary for everyone, especially when we understand how the mind, body and spirit are connected and work together.
Another misconception is that in order to meditate, we must learn to clear the mind. Remember that the mind does the clearing spontaneously. Whenever the mind seemingly appears to be racing with thoughts, they are mental items that are on their way out to being released, to clear out the room and make space for new ideas.
An example I like to use to illustrate this with my clients and patients is to imagine you are in a room and you are sitting still off to the side. The door opens and 2 workers come in to take the trash away. Your job is to just sit there and let them do their job. After about 45 to 55 minutes, they take their lunch break and that is when you will sense a period of quietness and the mind appears to be clear and relaxed.
Still another erroneous belief is that when we meditate, we must actively force the mind into the present moment. I teach my students to allow the mind to wander however and wherever it wants to. If you feel terribly distracted and disturbed as to where the mind is taking you, simply ask yourself to focus on the breathing, the heart beating and the movement of your body as you breathe, and the mind will gently come into the present time.
There are 2 common issues about which I am frequently asked. The first one is how do we find out what our purpose in life is because we are told whatever is unique about each of us is meant to serve and help others. The second one is how to find the answers and solutions to really tough problems after we have spent weeks to months struggling with them and coming up empty.
Not everyone believes that each of us has a purpose in life. Most are of the mindset that we are all born and then we go through a process called life which involves growing up, going to school, getting a career, possibly having a family, then retiring and then whatever else. This is life on automatic in which we allow our old programming or paradigms (set of habits leading to predictable behaviors) to steer us here and there, like a pinball. This is basically living life passively.
For those of us who believe that each of us is uniquely qualified to serve others with our innate gifts, realizing our purpose can still be a challenge. Purpose is not a thing to be chased or found. It is not a problem to be solved. The closest explanation is that our purpose is usually connected to whatever we are inherently passionate about, because whatever we are passionate about, we tend to do well effortlessly and prosper in it. Purpose normally finds us and comes through us as a sense of knowing and fulfillment.
Problem solving is a fascinating subject. How many of us have struggled on and on about some issue and nothing we come up with seems to be a fitting solution? We forget that solutions discovered at the same level in which the problem arose will not be viable solutions. Kyle Cease mentions that this is essentially like 3rd graders who are stuck on a 4th grade math problem because they don’t know how to do 4th grade math.
Another example is if we are swimming in a lake and our bodies are causing the water to move and we are complaining that the water won’t be still. The solution is to move out of the water, to higher ground. Then, we are able to find the solution.
This is what doing more “being” and less “doing” ultimately means. We tend to do a lot of things every day as a means of distraction, sometimes to cover up deeper issues that we want to keep hidden and unaddressed, perhaps issues that need to be released so that we can free ourselves from a self-imposed emotional cage of not-enoughness or low self-worth. Remember that there is a reason why we are called human beings and not human doings.
Next time when there is an issue that requires a solution and you just can’t seem to find it, try allowing the mind to slow down and clear itself just by giving it some quiet time. Find a quiet spot anywhere and just sit comfortably with your eyes closed. You’d be amazed as the answers that come as you begin to tap into and access higher intelligence or the universal mind.
