Mirroring the New World: A New Year
I don’t think anyone would disagree that the last 2 years really tested all of us. None of us was immune. None of us escaped. We were all affected in some way, but not all the same way. As I’m sure a great many folks did likewise, in observing and sharing my thoughts and feelings with others, I discovered that some individuals rode these tidal waves like warriors in full body armor out to explore and conquer the world. Others wandered around perplexed and confused in some sort of in-between limbo, uncertain where to take their next step forward, appearing to be neither here nor there, while still many maintained or attempted to keep some semblance of the world and lives they had been used to for all these years, lives they held on for dear life, afraid to let go, as they had already identified themselves with these patterns long ago.
In my book, no one lacked courage. People did the best they could with what they had. No one anticipated that whatever was happening would drag on this way. So, what of this upcoming year, 2022? What can we expect? Or, is this a good time, if we haven’t already, to practice releasing all expectations and judgments as I have often recommended? Individuals and events do not disappoint us. They disappoint our expectations. We all have a desired ending to our stories, the end goal, the destination. But, what if we let that go? What if we use this opportunity to practice releasing every conceptualized outcome we have ever obsessed over? Maybe, we can just begin to enjoy the journey, the process, finally?
Would we survive?
We would actually thrive.
In my observation, those who rolled with the punches, and became their own champion chameleons did well. In fact, these folks did better than everyone else. These were the individuals who saw whatever was going on around them, recognized that they were the external, and then chose to go inward to “find themselves.” They were opportunists but not in the historic old paradigm. They did not take advantage of others to discover themselves. In this situation, we chose to seize the challenge availed to us by an outside force and discovered who we were without the 9 to 5 job, who we were without our own business, who we were without the Friday night boisterous drinking parties and dinner-with-a-movie nights out.
The external took away our regularly scheduled routine addictions that we looked forward to “to get away from it all,” the dreadful boss, the awful co-worker, the horrible staff, to get away from our self-imposed stresses, our outlets before we have to return to the grind on Monday. I am not judging or criticizing. I am just making an observation because I was guilty of the same patterns. I became complacent with my job, my business. I became complacent and too comfortable with what I didn’t like. I complained everyday as if that would somehow magically make a difference. I groaned about the changes I wanted to see but did seemingly very little to forge a path for that transformation. Remember, the more we complain, the more we are resisting, and the more things persist. This is a universal law of energy and vibrational frequency.
When places of business and establishments began closing their doors and shutting down, when I was forced to wear a mask and basically hide my identity and stand 6 feet away from the next person, when I was told we couldn’t hug or show any kind of affection to a friend or foe, it seemed as though all human connection we had with one another was yanked away from us and I started to feel like I was losing control, an illusory concept I had anyway. I thought well, I don’t know what is going on or what is going to happen from now on. I can’t find the answers in the here and now. I had already been meditating for some years now. I figured, now that is a life-saving tool I do have and from all that I have read and heard from the personal growth and spiritual leaders, instructors, this was the only way to have the answers come to me, intuitively, a download, if you will, from the universe.
As Kyle Cease says, if you’re in the 3rd grade, you won’t find the answers to 4th grade math, no matter how long you stare at it or ask your other 3rd grade classmates. You have to ascend, graduate to 4th grade in order to do so. Meditation gets you there.
There is much talk about the concepts of frequency and vibration. There is that one quote, the saying that most of us have heard at one time or another,
“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
In fact, I have that quote hanging in my work place. The only difference is that now, I finally know what it means. When I first began the mindful work, I used to call this quote a cop out saying or an excuse to blame me for the world’s shortcomings. It made no sense to me why the bad stuff in this world was my fault and why did I have to change first for someone else to change.
Ashamedly, I have to admit, I realized the fault of my reasoning only quite recently. If the world we see is indeed a mirror of ourselves, then the external are internal aspects of ourselves we project out. If whatever is external triggers us internally, we cannot blame that the fault is in the external, but it is something deep within us that remains unresolved that has to be brought to the surface light and then released. So, it stands to reason that if we changed ourselves, flowed with things, instead of fighting and resisting, if we learned to accept and do more being and less doing, if we feel deeply all that we are grateful for every minute of every day, every second of every day, then how we are will affect others because energy is infectious.
How many times have any of us been in a situation where when one individual is angry, the entire group catches wind of it and becomes angry, as well? The same thing happens the other way. If one person is joyful and peaceful, it generates the same sense of wellbeing with everyone else. Many of the patients I have spoken with during the past months have noticed the dramatic difference in the behavior of the those around them and how seamlessly their day-to-day routines are flowing. All they did was change themselves which unfolded spontaneously and effortlessly as they meditated day after day.
I’m often asked why meditation seems to be the most popular answer with all of these authors and speakers for personal growth and self-improvement. It is because this tool remains the only and the most effective means of dissolving the trash and garbage that have collected inside the mind and body (noise and clutter). There is something very powerful about sitting still and just letting the mind do its thing without our interference. It is the only time that we can literally feel how small we are in this huge space and how it is during this time that we do notice the vastness of space all around us. We notice the ambient noises and the walls, the furniture and that we are this tiny spec amongst everything. Sitting in stillness allows the connection between the mind, body and spirit which is crucial for healing. Things we label as unpleasant and no longer serves us are given the opportunity to leave during this time.
I look at the last 2 years as practice years. I believe 2022 will be the telltale year, a true turning point for all of us. From everything I’ve read and listened to, embarking on new adventures may be scary at first because we are exploring uncharted territories. There is no precedent. There is no prior example that we can follow. We are the discoverers of the new place. But, the rewards will be phenomenal. We can operate out of our own innate pure genius and create the world we wish to live in. Michael Beckwith always reminds us to ask how we can serve from the passion that lies within all of us. To emerge out of the mediocrity pool and into the vastness of possibilities of the present moment, right now. This is the year we will find out all that we are capable of. 2022 will witness all of us soar to heroic greatness.
Sending you all blessings of love, peace, joy, light and harmonious prosperity in this new year.
Meditation and Relaxation (Meridian leading into Meditation) See previous issues for more examples!
1) Sit comfortably in a chair or sofa and set a timer for 1 hour.
2) Close your eyes and take a slow deep breath through your nose or pursed lips while counting to 7. Track the breath down to the belly, and expand the belly. Then, release and exhale through your mouth by sighing out the breath counting to 7. Feel the belly return to the spine. Repeat 2 more times.
3) Access the blade of one hand with the fingers of the opposite hand and begin applying light repetitive pressure or tapping lightly while saying, “I give myself permission to release, relax and let go.” Repeat and then switch hands and repeat the above words.
4) Access the brow points where the eye brow begins near the forehead side and gently tap there with the fingers while saying, “I give myself permission to release all heaviness, all burdens, all past stories and patterns. I welcome the new.” Repeat the words one more time.
5) Access the corners of the eyes near but not on the soft temples and gently tap there with the fingers while saying, “Releasing all stuckness, all noise and clutter. I welcome the new.” Repeat the words one more time.
6) Access the areas under the eyes and gently tap the cheekbones while saying, “Letting myself feel lighter and lighter with time.” Repeat the words one more time.
7) Access both chest points and gently tap the areas while saying,
“Why is my life so incredible now that I didn’t notice before?”
“Why is my life filled with so much love that I didn’t notice before?”
“Why is my life so amazing now that I didn’t notice before?”
“Why am I surrounded by so much magic that I didn’t notice before?”
“Why am I more than enough and have more than enough that I didn’t notice before?”
“How did 2022 gift me with so many synchronicities that I didn’t notice before?”
Continue to gently tap the chest points and say, “I give myself permission to release, let go and surrender to the present moment.” Repeat 2 more times.
8) Set your hands down, inhale slowly to a count of 7 seconds through the nose and then sigh out the exhale through the mouth to a count of 7 seconds.
9) Now, just continue to sit quietly until the timer chimes. Let whatever your mind shows you be there as those are things on their way out. Your job is NOT to pull yourself back to the present moment. Your job is NOT to clear the mind. Your job is to just observe and do nothing.
10) Once the timer chimes, open your eyes slowly and just stare in front of you for a minute or so. This allows the energy flow in your body to settle down quietly.
If it is in the morning, you can now get ready to start the day. If it is bedtime, just go to bed.
