Patience
This word kept showing up in my mind all day today and as usual, I never really know the reason, but it gave me an excuse to pause and reflect on this word. Then, I caught wind of this most patient white heron and watched his incredible stillness and patience as he stood motionless for minutes on end. What does patience mean to you? I know how I feel when I think about how many times I’ve been told to have patience or to just be patient — mostly frustrated and irritated. But, isn’t it true that nothing can be rushed and that the best magic is on the other side of waiting?
This week as I taught clients how to begin their process of mental and physical healing with methods on changing the mindset, I realized that all failure stems from retreating back into the old story as soon as our expectations are not met immediately due to our lack of ability to wait; and that patience is contained in the very core of success whenever we embark on the journey of healing. It’s not just about our health that having patience is a virtue, but everything good we want to receive in life depends on possessing this trait. If we did not have patience, we would quit. Patience allows us the courage to stay in the game and to remain committed to our goals and dreams.
Patience is also required when we practice meditation. Although it is a period of reflection and release, many wonder how long they would have to sit before they will obtain the answers and solutions they are looking for. This behavior is also required when we learn a new skill as in playing an instrument or learning how to draw and paint. Frustration and doubt can sometimes tempt us to lose our patience and stop us in our tracks. Will power and focus are necessary to keep patience at hand.
The importance of this message is that too many of us leave the new path prematurely just to turn back to our not so comfortable comfort zone. I equate the comfort zone with an old worn easy chair that has all of the springs exposed and though it is uncomfortable to sit on, we go back time and time again because it is familiar and we don’t have to suffer the fear of an uncertain future or the fear of failure, which in and of itself is an illusion. Failure only exists when we don’t keep going but instead, we just stop.
Persistence and resilience empower us to maintain our patience in pursuing our endeavors whenever we start second guessing ourselves and our motives. Persistence keeps us going on the path to maintain our convictions and resilience gives us the skills to bounce back whenever we fall or lose confidence particularly when the results are seemingly unfavorable.
As those begin to install methods of changing their preprogrammed mental recordings, I encourage everyone to be patient or learn patience. The first step is just to develop an awareness of the concept of patience. I remind everyone that even when we plant a seed to grow a new tree, we must exercise patience and wait for the right time for the seed to develop roots and for the stem to break through ground above it. Our efforts in watering, providing the appropriate nourishing environment and other necessary conditions are all part of our time spent patiently waiting.
Probably the most important reason to develop the skill of waiting patiently is that whenever we install something new, we must remember that change is always inevitable as wherever we find a cause, there is always an effect, no matter how small the change is. For example, let’s say there is a well worn path next to a field of tall grass. If we just decided to take one small step into the grassy area, the original path has now experienced a change, widened for even just a little bit as we chose to step out. This new step may not be visible from far away because it is small, but on closer observation, the change is obvious, right?
Another illustration of change that is not readily visible to the eyes is looking at 2 glasses on the table, one with black coffee, the other with water. Notice that if we transfer one teaspoon of water to the black coffee, the coffee does not initially appear visibly lighter to the naked eye. Over the course of time, however, when more teaspoonfuls of water are placed into the glass of coffee, the discerning eye may noticed the lightening of the coffee. Perhaps the most obvious way to show the change is to compare a photo of before and after. Nevertheless, the point here is that there is a change despite the fact that we may not readily see it until it tips the threshold of our senses.
So, when you begin to start something new, something unfamiliar, have courage that just considering a change causes a change in that direction. A decided physical action causes a more significant change. Remember that little changes taken consistently over time will yield tremendous results. Your job is to just wait…patiently. The results will be beyond your wildest imagination.
Meditation and Relaxation
1) Find a quiet place and sit comfortably. Close your eyes gently and breathe in through your nose or pursed lips and track your breath down into the belly (5-7 seconds). Then, exhale through pursed lips if needed to extend the time (5-7 seconds). Repeat 2-3 more times, or more, if desired.
2) For today, we suggest the following Meridian points, remembering to use gentle repetitive pressure from the finger tips, or light tapping:
—Chest point, one or both sides
—Hand blade, using one or alternating both hands
—Brow point, one or both sides
—Corner of eye, one or both sides
—Bottom of the eye, one or both sides
—Below the nose above the upper lip
—Below the lower lip at the dip
—Return to chest point, one or both sides
3) All of the above points can be repeated in any order for as many times as desired or feel free to add the other points available, while using the following intentional statements listed below (again, you can compose your own, too):
—Why have I had so much patience with everything that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I been exceptional with self care that I didn’t notice before?
—Why has my life been so positively transformed that I didn’t notice before?
—Why are all my weeks so smooth and productive that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I been blessed with so many gratitudes that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I released everything that no longer serves me that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I received so much love and joy in life that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I experienced increased peace in my life that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I noticed so much abundance in my life that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I been so resilient that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I felt so empowered that I didn’t notice before?
—Why are all the people I care about doing so well that I didn’t notice before?
4) Return to the breathing exercises in 1) and you can choose to continue sitting in quiet reflection and meditation for up to an hour or as long as you want or you can begin getting ready for the morning. If at bedtime, you can also continue with meditation and then go to sleep.
5) Remember to journal your 8-10 gratitudes in the morning and evening or at least once a day. This activity is so important to level up your life when done consistently over time.
6) Remember to eat well, exercise, and learn something new either by reading or listening to a program.
