Grateful Thank-You’s
In recent years, we have heard a lot of people talking about the importance of being grateful and a lot of articles have been written regarding the tremendous positive effect on our mental and physical wellbeing when we express gratitude. As I am writing this blog, my thoughts drift to the words, “grateful” and “thank you,” and for a moment, I wondered if every time we said “thank you” we were genuinely grateful.
I remember as children, my parents taught us early to always say “thank you” whenever anyone gave us something or did something for us. It was one of many life lessons on how to be a well-accepted human adult and the virtue of being polite. When we achieve these qualities of decency, we also make our parents proud, proud that our relatives and close friends could judge them as great parents who were successful in raising good kids.
So, it became an automatic response for me to say “thank you” as I didn’t have to think about it. Although, in general, I have noticed that this is not necessarily a response we hear often these days, automatic or not. How many times have we opened or kept the door open for someone, or performed some other kind deed, only to receive a glance of dismissal or no acknowledgement at all?
And then, we remember that the bad behavior is not about us but about them, but this conversation will be for another day.
Every year during the week of Thanksgiving, I reflect and sit for long periods of time thinking about the one day we are all supposed to remember to give thanks. So, what does giving thanks mean to me now that I’m no longer that kid?
When I say, “thank you” these days, it has much more meaning for me and as I evolve consciously with time, I can feel it coming from the heart more and more. I have learned to say things with authentic meaning and if I feel negatively about certain things or if my reply will not be in agreement with the other person, provided that the other person is not as consciously aware as I am, I refrain from saying more. This is especially true if the other party turns my difference of opinion into an argument of whose side is right, instead of a valuable opportunity to explore with curiosity, each other’s point of view.
Coming back to the meaning of Thanksgiving—I teach my clients to write out 8 to 10 or more things they are grateful for, once in the morning as soon as they wake up and once in the evening before they turn in. I also remind them that throughout the day when they are taking breaks, to just write down 1or 2 gratitudes, read it out loud, and then really get into the feeling of it. This could be feeling grateful for something that occurred in your favor, about something material you received, regarding an accomplishment, over feeling awesome about something and so on.
You can also give thanks to goals, ideas and plans that you have been desiring for the future that haven't arrived yet. I have recommended clients to include in their gratitude journals their gratitude for things that have not come into physical reality yet, but to feel grateful for them as if they already have them. There is an abundance of literature about gratituding in this way. (Kyle Cease’s Kylego technique, Neville Goddard’s works)
Since the mind does not know the difference between what is real or imagined, telling the mind repeatedly that you are thankful for receiving what you’ve wished for, not only removes the worried anticipation of not having that particular thing or event come into fruition, but also allows the mind to embrace it as either a possibility or fact and so the fear and worry are released. Once the mind is removed from a place of lack and limitation, your energetic frequency changes and you begin to attract whatever your energy aligns with. This is why it is important to keep thoughts of what you want and not thoughts of what you don’t want.
Remember that you attract who you are by the frequency of your thought’s vibration, not what you want (Vishen Lakhiani), which means that if what you want is not on your mind, but that fearing you will never have it is what you’re thinking about most of the time, what you fear will come to manifest instead. Understanding this concept is vitally important and remains a challenge for most of us.
Above all things, however, is that from my observation, many of us are always doing for or giving to others most generously without any thought about fulfilling our own wants, needs and desires. We are all here in this earth school to grow and part of growing is discovering what sets our passionate self on fire and focusing on that, which could mean setting up goals, which can be big or small, to get us moving on our path. And, when our purpose finds and flows through us, we then begin to truly understand the role of the Divine within each of us, allowing our life to be free and effortless. With this new-found freedom, we are then able to be of service to others.
Sometimes our purpose is to accept the present circumstances for what they are and simply surrender to “what is” for an indefinite length of time so that we can receive information from universal intelligence on how to move forward. This typically happens when our spirit receives a calling and yearns to leap out of the comfort zone in order to avoid a sense of stagnancy.
Take time this Thanksgiving to remember how important you are. Yes, YOU. Have you sat down recently to truly ask yourself if you’ve taken time to feel how you want to feel, be how you want to be, do what you want to do or have what you’ve always wanted to have, but that someone else always came first?
So, this year on Thanksgiving, I encourage you to make it the first day of the rest of your life, that you take time every day to focus on you. Let’s begin giving thanks now to yourself by celebrating YOU! Start with the following regimen below:
Breathing Exercises:
Complete 3 cycles of inhalation and exhalation by breathing in through your nose and exhaling through your mouth, taking 5 to 7 seconds to do so for each breath. Focus on each inhaled breath as you follow it down into the belly while visualizing light infusing into every cell in your body. And, as you release your breath, take 5 to 7 seconds to do so while visualizing the heaviness being released from your mind and body.
