Our Body: Is It All A Mind Game?
Personal growth author and speaker, Wayne Dyer, always reminded us that if we change the way we look at something, that thing we look at changes. Controlling our perception of the external world, what goes on around us, grants us unimaginable powers necessary to navigate our well being and everything else in our lives.
From our childhood on, we have been unconsciously programmed to accept as truth what we have been told and everything we experienced around us to be true, and that that was the way things ought to be. We are told at a very early age what to do, how to think, and all the things we should and should not feel. How we learned to perceive the world was ingrained by our parents or other adults and the external environment around us.
It is no wonder many of us grow into confused adults. I know that many individuals like I have been on a continuous journey to find out who I really am, trying to figure out what I love and what I don’t, what my gifts are versus what I am trained to be good at because the adults around me pushed me in a certain direction. I decided to make it my lifetime mission to unravel who I really am in this earthly life.
Everyday I think about the decisions I’ve made and continue to make and how my parents would likely not agree with many of them. For all these years, I’ve observed ambiguity in the answers my clients/patients have given me when I have asked them in earnest, what they wanted out of this life? Many of them looked at me as if it were the strangest question they have ever been asked followed by,
“I don’t know. No one has ever asked me that. I’ve never given what I want much thought.”
Many of us are super achievers in finding out what others want but come up short in asking ourselves what fulfills our soul and spirit. We grow up being expert people pleasers, a behavior that is an extension of our relationship with our parents to get their approval. Who doesn’t want to be seen, accepted and praised by those who raised us? After all, for many of us, our sense of worth depended on what they thought of us. Perhaps for some of us, we are still allowing our self worth to depend on what they think of us now.
It then becomes a challenge when it comes to asking my clients/patients to change their mindset to start healing their pain, whether it be mental or physical. They become lost.
As I have mentioned previously, the body is a faithful unquestioning servant of the mind. The body cannot distinguish between what is real or imagined originating from the mind. The first thing to healing is to make the decision to be well. This can be difficult when we have depended on others to tell us what to think and believe. This can also be a challenge if we merely focus on how our present health status is and how long it has been going on. Our ambivalence and uncertainty arise from our attention to the current reality. Whenever we feel poorly, we can’t seem to disconnect from this perception to begin painting a brighter, healthier future. We believe that the current reality today as we have come to know it will just be perpetuated tomorrow.
I am here to tell you that is simply not true.
At this point, I want to mention something relevant author/speaker Kyle Cease shared on his May 7th YouTube episode. He stated that our opinion of feeling stuck originates from the egoic mind and that we eventually become what we resist. Our mistake is letting our present reality control and monopolize our thoughts. The old patterns (i.e. our current health status) are our old small story that the ego wants to keep alive. Having a daily meditation practice allows us to surrender our judgment of feeling stuck in how we feel which prevents us from moving forward in our path to healing.
In the many years I have worked with people, there are always those that rise to the occasion. This only reaffirms my belief that what is possible for one person is possible for everyone. The key to change is deciding to choose to do so and then to do whatever possible to condition the mindset to change toward your path to grow. It is important to remember the following as we embark on our journey to change:
—Your current situation is a result of yesterday’s decisions. Change does not happen when we focus and complain about our current situation. It is like trying to change a fully grown tree. We can trim it, paint it, curse at it, and it remains the same tree. Remember that nourishing something negatively or positively has the same effect in keeping whatever we’re focused on alive.
—Talking incessantly about our current reality prevents our ability to move forward with new conditions we seek. The solution is to plant a new seed, nourish it, and allow this new seed to blossom into a new tree. If we focus our daily mental efforts in believing we can feel and be better, go a step further and believe with emotion that we are better already, the body inevitably begins to move in the direction of change.
—Daily meditation and quiet reflection permit the mind to work with the body to clear the noise and clutter (trash) within us. This activity allows the release of effort and energy invested in our past and anticipated future patterns to be made available in the present moment for us to make the necessary changes in our belief system to pave the way for the envisioned future we desire.
—The only way to see a different and better future is to change what is going on right now. We need to avoid dragging the past through the present moment and occupy space in the future.
—There will be resistance and the egoic mental chatter will let us know immediately. The ego is always fearful of dying off and will spread the fear to us. Expect this and continue the daily exercise of bringing the more positive future into the present moment thoughts. Persistence will guarantee success.
Meditation and Relaxation
1) Find a quiet place to sit comfortably. Close your eyes gently and take a slow deep breathe through your nose or through pursed lips, tracking the breath down to the belly (5-7 seconds) and then exhale through your mouth (5-7 seconds). Repeat this 2-3 more times or as desired.
2) Meridian points to access with intentional statements (feel free to choose your own set of points):
—Chest point, using one or both sides
—Hand blade points, using one hand or alternating between both
—Brow point, using one or both sides
—Corner of eye, using one or both sides
—Under the eye, using one or both sides
—Top of the head
—Return to chest point, using one or both sides
3) Intentional Statements
—Why is there so much abundance in my health for the past year that I didn’t notice before?
—Why is there so much abundance in my happiness for the past year that I didn’t notice before?
—Why has my life changed so positively now that I didn’t notice before?
—Why am I experiencing so much joy now that I didn’t notice before?
—Why is everything in my life getting better and better that I didn’t notice before?
—Why have I been so resilient for the past year that I didn’t notice before?
—Why am I mentally and physically stronger than ever now that I didn’t notice before?
4) Continue to sit quietly for 30 to 45 more minutes or conclude with breathing exercises from 1) and if it is in the morning, remember to journal and get emotional with the 5-10 things you’re grateful for, learn something new for 10-15 minutes, exercise for 10-15 minutes, then start your day. If it is at bedtime, remember to journal new gratitudes or read over with emotion the ones from the morning and then go to sleep.
