Resolutions and Manifestations: Releasing and Accepting Control
Every January we hear everywhere all these people making resolutions, goals to achieve change, but does the transformation ever come to fruition or do our efforts simply fizzle out? Should we just be realistic and stop setting ourselves up for failure and then feel even more like a “loser” or that we are simply “not enough?” As for me, I’ve been there, done that. This year, I decided to take a slightly different approach.
Instead of making definite plans of change, I decided the best way was to declare that I would make small new steps each day. I decided that my goal is to let events and “stuff” work their way “through” me. I will set goals so my life has some GPS and directional guidance, but ultimately I know that I am to appreciate the process and the journey and not be obsessed with the end goal or destination. In this way, I will be nearer to my initially set goals than I would if I were absolute or “all or none” about it.
The thing I have learned about setting goals is that they have a knack for not coming true. Sometimes it is because the goals we set come from the ego and not from our heart and so if there is no energetic alignment then it does not come true for us. Establishing goals also lends to that old feeling of lack, that the reason why we are asking for that specific something is that we don’t have it. Anyone who is familiar with energy work will tell you that the more you wish and pray for it, the least likely the universe will grant that for you. Most folks have said to me that they simply cannot “pretend” that they have something that they don’t in reality. However, the perpetual “wanting” creates that emptiness, the void we feel and we eventually sink into the quagmire of “stuck-ness” and significant unhappiness.
Manifestation techniques are centered around not only setting the goal, but to also “feel and believe” that we already have it. Imagination is easy for children. They conduct imaginary play all the time. Somehow, as we get older, we lose that sense of innocence and fun. We become all to rigidly serious and forget the power of imagination. Imagination makes it real in the mind and in the body. Whatever our thoughts are, the body believes and follows. This then creates that energy of already having it and so life mirrors that outcome and the universe gifts that to us. The famous “law of attraction” is centered around this construct.
I try to remember the above. I have had many years of trial and error and still work at it everyday. Everything I have shared in all of these newsletters has been from my own life and experiences. That is why every time someone asks me how do I know all these things to do and they proceed to tell me how lucky I am to have all this knowledge, I remind them that there is no secret here. It involves just time as we know it. Like everyone else, I deal with egoic thoughts on a daily basis. The parental conditions in which I grew up fed into the egoic memory. The ego tries daily to scare me, to worry me, to tell me that I’m not enough, not validated and I just simply do my best to understand it, even embrace it and use it to learn more about me. It helps me evolve by challenging me to wake up. Pain is growth they say.
As I look back in review of all that has transpired in the last year, my life and my family’s lives have changed drastically in such a short amount of time. I believe that I had help from someone, something, perhaps a force — I’ll send credit to the universe. I felt a guidance system was in place. As much as all the ideas and the decisions made seem to originate in my mind, I am aware of such a thing as consciousness that is all around me and not in my mind and so I would rather say that everything that happened to or for me came from a type of universal intuition and collaboration.
I still remember journaling simple truths, that I yearned to be near water because ionization of the atmosphere promotes longevity and I’ve always loved the smells and sounds of the water and the wildlife associated with water. I remember writing down that I wanted to be in a place where I could do more integration of Eastern healing into the traditional practice of medicine to wake people up to their own innate power of healing. And then, through sitting still in silence, listening to the space around me, my mind became less cluttered with noise and more clear to the intuition available to me.
Many people have said to me,
“Oh, you’re so lucky.”
I say to them what sport psychology expert and international equestrian riding coach Daniel Stewart said the time we attended his seminars,
“We don’t get lucky. We make lucky.”
So, in the month of formulating resolutions, I have decided to continue to let go of controlling the external environment, what other people are doing or saying and just keep going inward and working on controlling what I can control. I remember to look around me and within me, reminding myself of all the things I am grateful for and to remember to feel grateful no matter what, to feel grateful just because I exist and am present. I remember to remember nothing is bad or good, positive or negative and that nothing is happening to me as I am not a victim.
People have asked me how is it that if some event happens to affect them emotionally, that that is not a direct effect? I remind them that we really do not control or instigate much of what occurs on the outside. But, if that thing outside makes us emotional in some way, we must ask what is that really digging up that is already living inside of us, perhaps from a past event we experienced that was never resolved to our liking? Because, the reality is things just are, things just happen every moment of every day and everything is unfolding before our eyes in its own appropriate timing without our interference.
Whatever seems illogical sometimes turns out to be the best thing that could possibly happen. We can understand this if we stop judging the situations. We think that whatever we want at the time we want it is the correct way but that is just the ego. That’s just the ego making trouble and messing with our minds. It thinks it knows all but it does not and never does. It is distrustful and constantly asks for evidence. Nothing new that happens for you in the future will ever have evidence to show you before it happens, because it is unknown until it happens. Trust your instincts is another phrase for trust your gut feeling.
It has been my experience that if my heart says to take that leap, no matter how scary, I find a way to make that happen. Second guessing comes from the ego and I am careful with that. Kyle Cease (comedian turned personal growth author and speaker) reminds us of the 5 second rule. The heart’s answer will come within 5 seconds. Anything that comes after that is the ego talking doubt and injecting excuses into your head. Taking a leap of faith can feel like going into a new house with no furniture or appliances. The up side is that it is a blank slate and that I get to design it any way I want to.
A few of the most common New Year’s resolutions are,
“I want to lose weight,” or “I want a better job,” or “I want to make more money.”
But, whatever the resolution statements are, the same techniques hold true. We need to step back and ask ourselves “Why?” Let’s say the real reason for the weight loss is to be more healthy in the new year. Then, perhaps a more appropriate statement of resolution would be that I want to be more healthy. By putting out into the universe a broader general statement, we can then receive many more gifts in addition to the loss of weight. The same goes for the better job or making more money. If ultimately financial security is the goal, then the resolution would be to achieve security and let the universe figure out how to make that happen for us.
To facilitate the resolutions I always recommend keeping a journal. Some of the most successful people have admitted that they keep a journal where they document their ideas and thoughts, as well as their gratitudes and dreams. Whatever we write down has a creative energy of its own. It’s like an announcement of sorts to the universe. What I try to remember every moment is to be genuine and honest with myself in terms of feelings coming through. If I am feeling off, I sit with it and let that feeling have a seat with me. Amazingly, it does go away. I remind myself everyday that if I can help just one person feel better, then my day was successful and fulfilling. The days go smoother, everything seems to miraculously fall into place and even those around us feel that magic, too.
The key to committing to resolutions is small steps. Many small steps make a ginormous step. I am looking forward to and confident in knowing that many of you will definitely be successful in accomplishing your 2022 resolutions. Sending you all much love, peace, joy and light this year!
Relaxation and Meditation
1) Find a chair and sit comfortably. Close your eyes and take a slow deep breath in through your nose or pursed lips taking about 5-7 seconds and track that down to your belly. Exhale through your mouth taking 5-7 seconds and push the belly toward your spine. Repeat 2 more times.
2) Access the chest Meridian points with both hands and begin applying light repetitive pressure or tapping while using the following intentional statements:
—Why was 2022 the most amazing year yet that I didn’t realize before?
—How did all my resolutions come true no matter what happened?
—How did I make my own lucky that I was not able to before?
—How did I receive so many blessings this year that I was not able to before?
—How did I become so healthy this year no matter what happened?
—How am I so filled with joy and peace that I didn’t notice before?
—How did life for me become so incredible and magical that I did not notice before?
3) Change the Meridian point if it calls to you or keep the same and say the following:
—I give myself permission to release all heaviness and burdens
—I give myself permission to release things that no longer serve me
—I give myself permission to relax, to feel peace and to be still
4) Repeat the breathing exercises from 1) and then sit still with your eyes closed for 10-15 minutes more or longer if you can
5) Open your eyes slowly and carry on your day if it is the morning or just go to bed if this is at night.
